Volunteers are vital to The Action Center’s success!!In 1968, The Action Center was formed by a group of volunteers concerned for struggling families in the community. Today, nearly half a century later, volunteers are still at the core of The Action Center. There are more than 40 unique volunteer opportunities that include direct participant interaction, behind the scenes tasks and special events, just to name a few. Opportunities fall into one-time or weekly formats and are available for individuals, families, and groups – there’s a match for everyone! In 2016, 4,734 individuals contributed 103,048 hours of service! Without them, The Action Center would have needed 80 additional staff members to meet the needs of the community! But in the absence of this intention, there exists a whole world of direct and indirect political commentary. No matter how apolitical a story may seem, every narrative we write allows us to understand gender, sexuality, globalization, ethics, privilege, and class in a unique way. What are the merits of examining the personal perspective we employ when we build our stories? Do political labels matter when it comes to writing fiction? This two-hour workshop will include mini-readings from global literature in order to facilitate rich conversations and observations. We’ll also be working with writing prompts and examining its political relevance together. This workshop will be fun, intense, and probing. Jomon Lecture & Workshop Master Potters Ifurai, Genya Murakami, and Ryujiro Oyabu Simpson United Methodist Church  is hosting master potters from Japan for a lecture and hands-on workshop in partnership with Studio Arts Boulder. "Jomon" means "cord pattern" and describes the decorative style of pottery made during this ancient era in Japan. The event at Simpson United Methodist Church will include a lecture (free to attend), a potluck lunch, and a hands-on workshop (ages 12+). Learn ancient ceramics techniques of the Jomon era, starting with a coil pot and incorporating elemental symbols to create dramatic forms. This lecture will provide a review on obtaining a blood gas sample (arterial vs venous), how to interpret the values, and then most importantly, how to clinically apply this information to the patient in front of you. Paint your Pet registration ends 1 week prior to class. Once registration has ended, you will be asked to submit a front facing or profile photo of your pet. We will use this photo to create a sketch of your pet on a 16"x20" canvas for you to paint. One pet per canvas. At Sipping n’ Painting you will have a blast relaxing, creating and tapping into the right side of your brain while sipping on the beverage of your choice from our bar. No experience necessary! We will walk you through the featured painting with step-by-step instruction. You will leave with your own unique canvas art creation and memories to share. Ample parking is available behind our studio in a few designated spots, on the street, or diagonally across the street at the Regis University parking lot for a small fee of $3.00.
